John Arthur was born on April 30, 1930, in rural Orange City, the son of Bert and Elizabeth (Van Oort) Visser. He was raised on a farm near Middleburg and graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull. The family moved to Sanborn, where he became involved in the cement business.

On June 14, 1951, he married Judith Marian Koerselman in Middleburg. Except for a year in Sanborn, they made their home in Hull, where he worked in the shop of Arend Oliver and in the feed business of Joe Meirsma. In 1960, he and Egbert Gritters purchased the feed business, and in 1964, he became the sole owner of Visser Feed and Produce, which he operated for many years. In the spring of 2008, he became a resident of Pleasant Acres.

Mr. Visser was an active and supportive member of the First Reformed Church, serving on the consistory as an elder and a deacon and teaching catechism classes. He was also a member of the Gideons and the Hull Business and Professional Club, where he was named Employer of the Year.

The family enjoyed traveling to the Iowa Great Lakes. He became very interested in "Chris Craft" boats, working on and refinishing these wooden boats with his family and showing them at the Okojobi Boat Show. Later, he spent a lot of time at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Hull, where he enjoyed golfing with friends and his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of exactly 59 years, Judy; four children and their spouses, Robert and Karen Visser, of Afton, Minnesota; Jay and Jeanne Visser, of Hull; Larry and Pam Visser, of Oakdale, Minnesota; and Laura and Jody Gravedoni, of Omaha, Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Danielle, and her husband, Rick Rickert; Kara Visser; Evan Visser, and his wife, Tamyres; Mark Visser; Jeff Visser; Kim Visser; Megan, and her husband, Bruce Anderson; David Visser; Adam Gravedoni; and Nicholas Gravedoni; two brothers and their wives, Ed and Gertie Visser and Bernie and Judy Visser, all of Sanborn; and a sister-in-law, Glenda Visser, of Sanborn.
