Gerrit was born on April 3, 1941, in Maurice, the oldest of seven children born to Herman and Christina (De Koter) Van Donkelaar. He was named after both grandfathers. He was born and lived in Maurice until 1958, when his family moved to Sioux Center. There he played basketball from 1958 to 1960; the team being state champions in 1959.

He enjoyed all sports, playing slow pitch softball until age 51 and watching all the National Basketball Association games. He liked mowing his lawn on his John Deere tractor, watching nature from his window where he had several bird feeders, planting trees, and working on cars. He loved the family time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
