Lyftogt, Tillie, Mrs. Ben, 1887-1941

Mrs. Ben Lyftogt passed away at her home 3-1/2 miles north of Newkirk after seven years illness with cancer.

Mrs. Lyftogt, nee Tillie Van Es, was born March 29, 1878 [1887?] in Floyd township, and died September 20, 1941. She was married to Peter Groen in 1905. He preceded her in death June 20, 1917. Four children were born to this union: John of Orange City; Mathilda, Mrs. Lawrence Hyink of Maurice; and Anna and Peter at home.

On Feb. 3, 1921 she was married to Ben Lyftogt. They had one child, Gerrit. Also surviving are three step-children, Hattie, Mrs. Joe Tensen, of Sheldon; John of Hospers; and Wilbur Riemersma of Hospers; 15 grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. John Van Es of Orange City; 4 brothers, Gerrit, Dick and Jake from Alton and John of Sheldon. Her father John Van Es died Sept. 7, 1940 and her brother, Arie, died Aug. 15, 1931.

Mrs. Lyftogt was a faithful member of the Newkirk Reformed Church. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 o'clock at the Lyftogt home and at 1:45 at the Newkirk Ref. church. Pall bearers were six neighbors, John Beyer, Henry P. Langstraat, William Kastein, Henry C. Langstraat, Ed Oolbekkink and William Langstraat. Burial was in the Newkirk cemetery.

Another obituary (Sioux Center News, Sept. 25, 1941) gives the date of her marriage to Ben Lyftogt as Feb. 3, 1922; her age as 54; her birth year as 1887 (matching her given age); and states that she and Ben Lyftogt were engaged in farming.
