Hawarden, Iowa 51023Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- Woodrow G. "Woody" Peters, 92, of Hawarden, died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Woodrow G. "Woody" Peters was born March 17, 1918 in Mankato, Minnesota, the son of Reinhard and Johanna Peters. He grew up east of Akron, Iowa and married Evelyn Peters on June 11, 1942 in Dakota City, Nebraska. Woody served with the US Army from 1941 to 1945 as an ambulance driver in Iceland and Paris, France. Following the war the couple lived south of Hawarden, Iowa where he began working at Northwestern Seed Company. Woody worked for the City of Hawarden in the Electric Department from June 1952 until retirement in June 1980.
Evelyn died on December 16, 1983. Woody later married Mary Fields on August 14, 1990 in Las Vegas. They made their home in LeMars until moving to the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden in January 2009.
Woody enjoyed gardening, fishing, gambling, dancing, and playing Bingo. He was always a member of the Lutheran Church in the communities he lived in.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons and their wives, Danny and Linda, Gary and Doris, and Ricky and Rose all of LeMars, Iowa; daughter, Michelle Schlumbohm and husband Scott of Hawarden; two step children; 9 grandchildren, Jeff Peters, Angela, Adam Peters, Paul Peters, Richard Peters, Andy Peters, Matt Peters, Morgan Schlumbohm, and Mitch Schlumbohm; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Woody was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; and many brothers and sisters.
