Paul Vernon Verburg
Paul Vernon Verburg passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 13, 2010 in San Gabriel, CA at the Fernview Convalescent Hospital. He will be remembered by the goodness of his heart, his compassion, his care for others, and a constant interest in the community, sports, and activities of the youth. He was born on April 29, 1922 at Coutts, Alberta, Canada. After coming to the United States, he became a citizen and he spent his early childhood at Maurice, Iowa. In high school, he participated in many activities, including basketball, baseball and choir.
He then went to North Western Junior College in Orange City, Iowa. There he not only excelled academically, but sang in the school choir and traveled many places with the choir. Later, he enrolled at Iowa State University and graduated as an Electrical Engineer. One month later, he was in the Officer Training Program for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Following his commission, he underwent further training at Harvard and MIT, to become a radar officer. He then served on the USS Star in the Pacific Theater of World War II. Okinawa, and all parts of the Pacific were his tours of service. Following the War, he worked as an electrical engineer for the Department of Water and Power in the Overhead Division for 37 years.
Paul always had a depth of interest in the church and its activities, including serving as Chairman of the Board at Monterey Park Methodist Church. He also enjoyed singing in the choir during all of their services. Paul’s interest in the youth included Boy Scouts, Minor League Baseball and any school event. As a 20 year member of the Santa Anita Bowling Green Club, he showed much talent and joy. Earlier, tennis and golf were part of his experience.
He is survived by his wife, Grace of nearly 65 wonderful years, a son David, a daughter Joan, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law from Colorado Springs, a niece and her family of Laguna, Hills.
A viewing will be held from 4 ;m-7pm at Douglass & Zook Chapel of Remembrance on Friday, March 19, located at 600 E. Foothill Blvd., Monrovia, CA. Interment will be held on March 20, at 9 AM at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA. A Memorial Service will follow at 1 PM in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 400 W Durarte Rd., Arcadia, CA.
