Norman William Bell, the son of Peter and Lena (Cole) Bell was born April 3, 1918 in Hull, Iowa. He received his education in Hull and graduated from the Hull High School in 1936. On June 18, 1943, he was united in marriage to Alvera A. Dethmers in Iowa City, Iowa. Norman served during World War II in the United States Army-Air force. After their marriage the couple made their home in the Boyden area where he operated the Boyden Reporter. In 1951, Norman became the Postmaster for the Boyden Post Office before retiring in 1978. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Arizona. His wife, Alvera preceded him in death on December 11, 1995 in Mesa, Arizona. Norman then married Bernice Johnson on October 4, 1997 in Boyden and she preceded him in death on January 1, 2004 in Mesa Arizona. Norman moved into the Christian Retirement home in Sheldon in 2005 and then on February 1, 2010 he became a resident of the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, where he passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 reaching the age of 91 years, 11 months and 21 days.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Boyden and of the William Monster Post# 272 of the American Legion of Boyden. He enjoyed golf, woodworking and photography.
Norman is survived by his daughter, Noreen and her husband Rich Jenkins of Garner, Iowa; a son-in-law, Jim Pullen of Des Moines, Iowa; and a step-daughter, Jan Hamman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 2 grandchildren, Sam and Emily Pullen; 2 step-grandchildren, Jeff and Julie Hamman and Tammy and Jeff Berghauer; and 5 step-great-grandchildren, Gianna, Kaade and Ayden Hamman; Brady and Ryan Berghauer; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Alvera and Bernice; a daughter, Leanna Bell; a grandson, Jayson Pullen; his parents and a sister, Marguerite Trower.
