Former Resident Dies at Age 74

John C. Gehan,74, well known commission man of Sioux City and a former Hawarden resident, died last Friday in a Sioux City hospital. He suffered a stroke the preceding Saturday.

Rosary was read Sunday evening at the Perasso Bros, Funeral home in Sioux City. Funeral services were held at 9:15 Monday morning at Blessed Sacrament church in Sioux City. Burial was at Emmet near Beresford.

Mr. Gehan was born November 24, 1886 at Beresford. Later he came to Hawarden with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gehan, who operated a hotel here. Later he moved to Wessington Spring, SD., and for a number of years was a rancher. He married Carol Sedgwick September 1, 1915 in Wessington Spring. He moved to Sioux City and established the Gehan Commission Co. He retired from the livestock business in 1956.

Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Katherine Owens of Providence, RI.,a son Glen of Cooperville Mich; three sisters, Mrs. Julia O'Connell of Philip, SD., Mrs. Mary Scroggs of Los Angeles and Mrs. Florence Rose of Denver, Colo; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren

Mr. Gehan was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic church and Epiphany council 743, K.of C and the United Commercial Travelers.

Relatives who attended the rosary include Charles Sedgwick, Mrs. Lois Taggert and Dr. and Mrs. Joe Akin of Hawarden and Mrs. Clarence Carlson of Alcester, Mrs. Chet Dagle and Mrs. Harry Hodoway of Hawarden attended the funeral.
