Herman (Frank) Atkinson, 76, of Seward, NE, died on May 14,1996. Services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward on Saturday afternoon, May 18,1996.

Mr. Atkinson was born August 2, 1919, in Dallas, TX, the son of Roy F. and Jeanne (Orabelle Swink) Atkinson. He was baptized and confirmed as an adult in the Lutheran faith in February of 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Richmond, CA. He married Elinor Krieger on January 28,1945, at St Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton, IA. Four children were born to this union.

Herman received his schooling in Texas, California and Nevada, graduating from Sparks, Nevada High School in 1936, and furthering his education at the College of Gaum, Northern Montana University. He graduated from Concordia College in Seward in 1968. After another year of schooling at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he worked for the Department of Roads in Lincoln until retirement in 1981. Herman served in the U.S. Army 30th Infantry for three years, and then became a cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was a heavy bomber pilot, flying 35 combat missions before his discharge in 1945. He joined the Reserves, and was recalled to active service in the Korean War where he flew another 39 combat missions before his discharge in 1945. After a year in Spokane, WA, they moved to Seward.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the International Lutheran Laymen's League, the Retired Officers Ass'n, and the V. F.W. Post #4755 of Seward.

Survivors include his wife, Elinor, of Seward; a son and his wife, Gregory and Johnna Atkinson of Omaha, NE; three daughters, Susan and her husband Edwin Schultz of Seward, Constance of Kansas City, MO, and Denise and her husband John Thomas of Mukwonago, WI; grandchildren, Stacie and Sarah Schultz, Diane and David Atkinson, Micah, Brianna, Kaitlyn Thomas and Ashley Roberts; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert Krieger of Manchester, IA, and the Reverend Herbert Krieger of Bridgeville, PA; a sister-in-law, Helen Shuck of Sioux City, IA; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael.
