Irene was born southwest of Sheldon, the daughter of James and Jennie (Oldenkamp) Nieuwenhuis. Her family lived southeast of Hospers, where she attended school.
On January 19, 1928, she married John E. Wiersema at Hospers. They farmed near Middleburg for forty-one years. He passed away August 18, 1969, at Orange City.
She continued to live on their farm with her son and his family until December of 1980, when she moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. For the past three months, she has been a patient at the Orange City Municipal Hospital, where she passed away.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church and the ladies organizations there.
Survivors include her son, Marvin Wiersema and his wife, Ramona, of Orange City; granddaughter, Lisa and her husband, John Schneider; four great-grandchildren, Amber Ann, Tonia Rae, Jonathon James and Nerissa Mae; brother, James Nieuwenhuis of San Diego, California; and sister, Leona Gilchrist, of Wichita, Kansas.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and William Nieuwenhuis, and sister, Marie Roetman.
