GERTRUDE WINTERS
Gertrude Winters, 89, ofOrange City died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at the Orange City Health System Hospital. There was a family prayer service on Wednesday morning, Jan. 26, at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Memonal services followed the prayer service at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiated. Interment was prior to the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice.
Gertrude was born on Sept. 2, 1915, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Sam and Hattie (Kosters) Dykstra. She was raised in Sioux Center, Ireton and Orange City, graduating from the Ireton Christian School. On June 5, 1935, she married Bert J. Van Maanen in Sioux Center. They farmed near Sioux Center and Maurice. Mr. Van Maanen died on June 27, 1966.
Gertrude then moved to Orange City, where she was a cook at the Orange City Municipal Hospital, Northwestern College, the Orange City Elementary School, and Dinner Date.
On July 29, 1973, she married Louis Winters in Orange City, where they made their home.
Mr. Winters died on June 12, 1996.
In March of 2000, she moved into the Pioneer Memorial Home, and in April of 2004, she transferred to the Heritage House Nursing Home, both in Orange City.
As a young woman, Gert joined the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.
When she married Bert, she joined the Reformed Church in America, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school classes, sang in the choir, and was active in Reformed Church Women’s Ministries, attending the Reformed Church Bible Conference for 45 years.
When she married Lou, she returned to the First Christian Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Faith, Hope, and Love Society.
Mrs. Winters was active in Women’s Extension and Farm Bureau Programs, singing in the Farm Bureau Women’s Chorus for 49 years.
She was recognized as a Medical Volunteer of the Year for her many years of caring
for the green plants in the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Survivors include her three daughters, Henrietta Van Maanen of Fort Dodge, Mary and her husband Dallas Alley of Council Bluffs and Shirley and her husband, David Van Wechel of Orange City; son and his wife James and Edith Van Maanen of Leavenworth, Kan.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Florence and Tony Van Beek of Rock Valley and Lorraine and Harold Neimeyer of Inwood; stepson and his wife Lloyd and Norma Winters of Rock Valley; step-daughter-in-law and her husband Diane and Roger De Haan of OrangeCity; l0 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 21 step-grandchildren, 52 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great~great-grandchild; a sister, Jessie Addink of Philomoth, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Tena Van Marel of Orange City; and a brother-in-law Ike Van Maanen of Sheldon.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Renes and Henriette Dykstra; six brothers, John and Sam Dykstra, Everette Marra and three infants; and a great-granddaughter.
