JOHN WIERSMA
HOSPERS, Iowa — John Wiersma, 92, of rural Hospers died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at
Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 am. Tuesday at Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers, with the Rev. Dennis Hietbrink officiating. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today, with family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mr. Wiersma was born Dec. 26, 1909, in rural Orange City. the son of Gardie and Margaret (Plender) Wiersma. He was raised in the Middleburg area.
He married Dorothy Johannah Van De Berg on May 24, 1935, in Maurice, Iowa. They farmed southeast of Newkirk until 1976, when they moved into Newkirk. In 1996, they became residents of Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In May 2001 they transferred to Pleasant Acres. Mrs. Wiersma died Dec. 3, 2001, in Orange City.
He was a member of Newkirk Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory as both elder and deacon. He enjoyed painting sceneries, especially mountains
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Gary and Alice Wiersrna of Omaha, Delbert and Audrey Wiersma of Hospers, and Wendell and Janet Wiersma of Le Mars. Iowa; eight grandchildren, Joy Ribble, Julie Slykhuis, Denice De Goei, LaRoy Wiersma, John Wiersma, Andrea Grossmann, Michelle Wiersma and Jacquelyn Wiersma; 10 great-grandchildren: and a sister, Florence Van Zyl of Orange City.
He also was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Arlene Wiersma; and two brothers, Harvey and Lawrence Wiersma.
