SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Donald G. Vander Schaaf. 65, of Sioux Center died Monday, May 6. 2002. at Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Memorial services will be 10 am. Friday at Faith Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Bernie Haan officiating. Burial will he prior to the services Friday in Memory Gardens Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 9 am. Friday at Oolrnan Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Donald Gene was born Dec. 12, 1936, in Hudson, S.D., the son of John S. and Tracy (Van Bruggen) Vander Schaaf. He was raised near Lebanon, Iowa, where he attended country school and then graduated from high school in Sioux Center.
On March 28, 1956, he married Delma Corinne Rensink in Sioux Center. From June 5, 1956 to Oct. 1, 1957, Don served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. They then made their home in rural Sioux Center until 982, when they moved into town. Don and Delma farmed until 1963, when he started Don’s Digging Service, operating trenchers, backhoe and other excavation equipment. His company was instrumental in installing many utilities underground in Sioux Center, implementing the Northwest Iowa Rural Water System and many other projects.
In 1976, he became an auctioneer and realtor. He also bought and sold antiques and collectablies and later drove a bus for the public school. Mr. Vander Schaaf was a charter member of Faith Christian Reformed Church, where he was an elder on the consistory. a Sunday School teacher and served on the building committee. He was active in the Lions Club and Heritage Village, served on the Sioux County Tax Review board and volunteered as a timekeeper for Dordt College basketball games for 20 years. Don strongly supported Sioux Center and its progressiveness. He was always a willing volunteer for projects or events to promote Sioux Center. In recent years, he served as an inspector for many city projects. He was also an active supporter of the Sioux Center Christian School, Unity Christian High School in Orange City, Iowa, and Dordt College in Sioux Center. He enjoyed golfing and loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Delma; four children and their spouses. David and Diane Vander Schaaf of Barahoo, Wis., Diane and Ken Nywening of Campbell Hall, N.Y., Debra and Michael Weg of Worthington, Minn., and Daniel and Jan Vander Schaaf of Hudsonville, Mich.; 10 grandchildren. Justin, Danielle, Kathryn and Matthew Vander Schaaf. Kyle and Kimberly Nywening, Madison and Mitchael Weg and Courtney and Morgan Vander Schaaf; his father, John S. Vander Schaaf of Sioux Center; and a sister and her husband, Lois and Leon Wichers of Sioux Center.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
