ORVILLE VERHOEF
LE MARS, Iowa - Orville VerHoef, 91, of Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 am. Monday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars, with the Rev. Tom Shinkle officiating. Burial will be in Sheldon Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 am. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
Orville VerHoef was born Sept. 3, 1910, at Hull, Iowa, the son of Cornelius and Johanna (DeRoos) VerHoef. He graduated from Orange City Academy. He participated in many sporting activities while attending school. He married Bernice G. Hayes on May 20, 1934, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Later in life, Orville moved to Alaska for six months and worked on the Al-Can Highway. He saved enough money to open the Modern Appliance Store in Sheldon. He operated the store for 25 years before retiring. Upon retirement, Orville and Bernice moved to LeMars. Orville began a new pursuit of building homes. In 1999 Orville and Bernice moved to Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
Orville will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Bernice; daughters, Connie and her husband, Charles F. Denton of Peoria, Ariz., and Sheila and her husband, Rodney R. Anderson of Le Mars; six grandchildren, Steven C. Denton, Gregory C. Denton, Bradley L. Denton, Douglas P. Denton. Todd M. Anderson and Kimberly J. Hanson: nine great-grandchildren, Colby, Cody and Chad Denton, Lisa. Audra and Blake Sims, Jaz and Seth Hanson and Carter Anderson; and a sister, Catherine Miller of Paullina, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Tillie Scholten; and two brothers, Wally and Matthew.
