ARLENE VORTHERMS
GRANVILLE, Iowa - Arlene Vortherms, 71, of Granville died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10:30 am. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with the Rev. Kenneth Seifried officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction ot Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa. Arlene was born April 20, 1932, in rural Festina, Iowa, the daughter of Aloysius and Marie (Kuennen) Heying. In 1936 she moved near Granville with her family, where she was raised and received her education at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Granville, from which she graduated in 1950. On Oct. 1951, she married Erwin Vortherms at Granville. They made their home near Granville, where they were engaged in farming. Erwin died Sept. 3, 1957, and a year later, Arlene and her children moved into Granville. In the early I 960s, she began making handcrafted artificial floral arrangements for weddings, was school secretary at Spalding High School in Granville and also worked part time at the post office in Granville. She became postmaster in 1981 and retired from that position in 1992. In January 2002, she entered Northpark Senior Living Community in Sioux City and had been a resident of Indian Hills Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Sioux City since January 2004. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the church guild as well as the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Thomas and Carol of Sioux City, and Dennis and Debbie of Le Mars, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Rose and Ken Vande Brake, of Alton, Iowa; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Jeremy Vortherms and his wife, Nicole and their twin daughters, Kathryn and Emily of Slater, Iowa, Timothy Vortherms and his wife, Jamie of Lafayette, Ind., Holly Vortherms and her special friend, Ricky Laffoon, both of Johnston, Iowa, Justin Vortherms of Sioux Falls, S.D., Chad Vortherms and his wife. Jennifer of Granville, and James Vortherms of Le Mars, and his special friend, Addie Powell of Vermillion, S.D.; three step-grandchildren and three great-step-grandchildren, Michael Vande Brake of Olathe, Kan., Mark Vande Brake and his wife, Jamie and their children, Jacob and Alex of Belton, Mo., and Robin and her husband, Jon Wheeler and their daughter, Haley of Orange City, Iowa; a sister, Germaine and her husband, Joe Konz of Granville; three brothers, Kenneth Heying and his wife, Dianne of Sioux City, Leonard Heying of Granville, and Stephen Heying and his wife, Patti of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Heying of Granville.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Eugene Heying.
