EDWARD A. VAN ECK
Dr. Edward Van Eck, age 80, of Orange City, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 1996 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Oct. 14, at 10:00 a.m. at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Harlan Van Oort officiated. Burial followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
Edward Arthur was born May 26, 1916 at Grand Rapids, Mich., the son of Edward and Josephine (Rappold) Van Eck. He attended Hope College 1934- 1938, receiving his A.B.degree, and the University of Michigan 1940-1943 and 1946-1950, receiving his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. He served in the United States Army during World War II. On April 27, 1946 he married Dorothy Jeanette Muller at Holland, Mich. She died Jan. 9, 1986 at Orange City. Dr. Van Eck was Jr. bacteriologist with the Alabama Dept. of Public Health 1938-1940; bacteriologist with the Army in Naples, Italy 1943-1946; teaching assistant in the Dept. of Microbiology 1940-1943 and 1946-1948; and instructor in bacteriology 1948-1950, both at the University of Michigan; assistant professor in the Dept. of Bacteriology at the University of Kansas 1950-1953; lecturer and associate professor in the Dept. of Microbiology at the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, South India 1958-1963; and professor of biology at Northwestern College in Orange City 1963-1981. Among Dr. Van Eck’s former students are several microbiologists, biostatisticians, physiologists, biochemists, medical doctors, dentists, veterinarians and other health professionals, serving in Iowa and across the country. In 1987 Dr. Van Eck became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in July of 1995 he transferred to the Long Term Care Facility of the Orange City Hospital. He was a member of the American Reformed Church.
Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Eric Daane and Janice of Macon, Mo., and David Arthur and Linda of Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren, Anthony, Scott, Erik, Nicolas, Cara and Troy; a great-grandson, Keaton; three brothers, Marvin, Dale and Paul, all of Holland, Mich.; and a step-sister, June Westveir of Fort Myers, Fla.
