FRANCES VAN WYNGARDEN
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Frances Van Wyngarden, 94, of Orange City died Saturday, April 13, 1996, at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the American Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Harlan Van Oort officiating. Burial will be at 3:45 p.m. at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be after 2:30 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home, Orange City.
Mrs. Van Wyngarden was born Nov. 21, 1901, in rural Le Mars, the daughter of Ralph and Sarah (Aukema) Kurvink. In 1905 her family moved to rural Rock Valley, where she attended country school. In 1914, they moved to Grundy Center and she graduated from Grundy Center Academy in 1919.
On March 25, 1920, she married Claus De Vries in Grundy Center. They lived in Kelsey until 1925, when they moved to Archer, where they owned and operated a hardware store for 30 years. They retired in Archer in 1955.
While living in Archer, she was O’Brien County chairman of the Cancer Society for 15 years and was an active member of the Archer Reformed Church. Mr. De Vries died Sept. 5, 1962, at Archer. In February 1963, she moved to Pella, where she became head resident of Graham Hall at Central College. She retired in 1970.
She was a member of the Second Reformed Church of Pella where she was a member of the choir and Reformed Church Women. She also was a member of the Fortnightly Pella Women’s Club. On July 22, 1972, she married Walter Van Wyngarden at Pella. He died Dec. 22, 1982, at Pella. She moved to Orange City in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Arlyne) Ten Clay of Orange City; a daughter-in-law, Eleanor De Vries of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four stepsons and their wives, Cornelius and Erma, Henry and Minnie and Don and Helen Van Wyngarden, all of Pella and Jerry and Betty Van Wyngarden of Holland, Mich.; three stepdaughters and their husbands, Cornelia and Gerrit Bandstra of Lynnville, Tena Mae and James Bandstra of Pella and Alda and Nundi Dyalchand of Santa Barbara, Calif., and a sister, Jeannette Rushton of La Jolla, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne De Vries; a brother, Sidney Kurvink, and a son-in-law, the Rev. Albert H. Ten Clay.
