ABRAHAM W. VAN ROEKEL
Mr. Abraham W. Van Roekel, age 81, of Maurice, passed away Wednesday, September 6, at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 12, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Wayne Sneller officiated. Interment followed at Sherman Township Cemetery, near Maurice. Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home was in charge of services. Abraham William, who was known as "Abe", was born January 13, 1914, at Sioux Center, the son of William A. and Mary (Wielenga) Van Roekel. He was raised at Sioux Center, Steen, Minnesota, Perkins, and Maurice. He farmed with his parents for many years. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in the Phillipines.
On January 28, 1948, he married Josephine Henrietta Doornink at Sioux Center. They lived at Maurice. For several years, he operated the Phillips "66" tank wagon out of Sioux Center. In the early 1950’s he established Van’s Service Station in Maurice, which he operated until retiring in the early 1980’s. Mrs. Van Roekel passed away March 11, 1985, at Iowa City. Mr. Van Roekel was a member of the First Reformed Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6129 in Sioux Center. He had served on the Maurice City Council and the Maurice Volunteer Fire Department, in earlier years. Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Pamela Rae and Allan Mueller, of North Liberty; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Jakeline; a sister, Mrs. Gerrit (Nancy) Kooima, of Rock Valley; a sister-in-law, Jean Van Roekel, of Alton; and a brother-in-law, Harry Hoekstra, of Maurice.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Louis, Marion, and Wilbur Van Roekel; and a sister, Sadie Hoekstra.
