ALTON, Iowa — Bert Vande Weerd, 78, of Alton died Wednesday, March 15, 1995, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Alton Reformed Church with the Rev. Roger Voskuil and the Rev. Robert Vander Schaaf officiating. Burial will be prior to the service at Nassau Township Cemetery at Alton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., at VanEtten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home in Orange City. A prayer service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Vande Weerd was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Hospers, the son of John and Hattie (Hulst) Vande Weerd. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On April 4, 1941, he married Hermine Vander Stoep at Orange City. The couple made their home at Alton where he operated a barber shop for 50 years.
Mr. Vande Weerd was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, Floyd Post 200, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Darwin De Vries of Kingsley and Yvonne and Glenn De Vries of Alton; five grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Harold and Dorothy Vande Weerd of Hospers, and four sisters, Annetta and her husband, Don Lammers of Alton, Alice Vande Weerd of Orange City, Harriet and her husband, Al Kooiker of Hull, and Tracia and her husband, Dick Morren of Beresford, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Nick.
