ARNOLD J. SMIT
ORANGE CITY Iowa — Arnold John Smit, 73, of Orange City died Friday Oct. 20, 2000, at the Veterans Administratjon Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smit was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Hull, Iowa, the son of August Alfred and Gertje (Vis) Smit. He married Betty Joan Dykstra on Nov. 22, 1949, in Hull. They made their home in Hull, where he Operated Arnold Smit Trucking. In later years, he was a salesman. In 1990, they moved to Sioux Center and, in 1995, they moved to Orange City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Orange City. In earlier years, he belonged to American Reformed Church in Hull, where he served as Sunday School superintendent. He had been a member of the American Legion Post in Hull. He enjoyed fishing with his family, watching them exhibit 4-H livestock, singing and participating in harness racing.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Arlen and Lee Ann Smit of Orange City, Ron and Adri Smit of Hospers Iowa, and Carl and Joy Smit of Holstein, Iowa; two daughters and their wives, Audrey and Perry Raman of Hull, and Joan and Randy Williams of Omaha; a daughter -in-law Sandra Smit of Newton, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, four great~grandchildren; three sisters and their husbands, Phyllis and Marvin Wissink of Sioux Center Iowa, Luella and Bud Krommendyk of Hull, and Judy and Jim Kersbergen of Arlington, Texas; three brothers and their wives, Delmar and Ardell Smit of Ireton, Iowa, Howard and Arlene Smit of Ontario, Calif., and Allen and Rose Smit of Sioux Falls and a brother-in-law and his wife, Harold and Mary Van Otterloo of Rock Valley, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a son, Roger; a son-in-law Alvin Van Voorst; and a sister, Darlene Van Otterloo.
