ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Marion A. Schalekamp, 92, of Orange City died Thursday,
Feb. 13, 2003, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
Memoria1 services will be 10 am. Monday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Monday in West Lawn Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 9:15 am. Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City Visitation will be after 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2:30 to 4 p.m., at the funeral home.
Marion Adrian was born Aug. 7, 1910, in Orange City, the son of Cornelius and Wilhemina (Van Roekel) Schalekamp. He was raised in Orange City and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Feb. 22, 1946, he married Jennie Van Gelder in Orange City. They farmed in Maurice, Iowa, until 1974, when they moved into Orange City. He was also employed with Vogel Paint Co. in Orange City. In December 1997, they became residents of Heritage House.
He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church and American Legion Pressman-Kosters Post of Orange City. His life was centered around his family. He enjoyed yard work and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Robert and Joanne Schalekamp of Orange City and Douglas and Linda Schalekamp of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two granddaughters, Wendi Schalekamp of Sioux Falls and Jackie Schalekamp of Orange City; a stepgranddaughter and her husband, Angie and Steve Scarberry of Sioux Falls; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Peter Kleinwolterink, Randall and Bertha Van Gelder, Margaret and John Reinders, Johanna Hofland, Agnes Van Gelder and Carol Van Gelder, all of Orange City, George and Fran Van Gelder of Colton. Calif.. Mary and Marv Vlieger of Chandler, Minn., and Ken and Henrietta Van Gelder of Ireton, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and their wives, Adrian (his twin)(and Mildred) Schalekamp, William and Grace Schalekamp and Richard and Florence Schalekamp; two sisters Genevieve Kleinwolterink and Leona and her husband, Ted Brunsting; and two brothers-in-law, Gary and Charles Van Gelder
