JOHN "BUD" VANDER BROEK

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa, Bud Vander Broek, 74, of Sioux Center died unexpectedly Saturday, May 14, 2005, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Wednesday in Sherman Township Cemetery, rural Maurice, Iowa. His casket will be transported by a horse-drawn hearse. There will be a prayer service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Maurice First Reformed Church. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today. with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at the church fellowship hall in Sioux Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

John Franklin "Bud" Vander Broek was born March 29, 1931, to Anthony and Martha, near Maurice. He was raised near Carnes, Iowa. He was stationed in Germany for 18 months during the Korean contlict.

On March 5, 1957, he married Henrietta Wilmina Vander Schaaf at the Middleburg Reformed Church in Middlehurg, Iowa. He worked for various area farmers until 1973. He then spent the next 25 years working for the Farmer’s Co-op Society of Sioux Center until 1995. After retiring, he worked for Bar-K-Farms of Sioux Center parttime.

Over the years. he was active in the Sioux Center and Hull Saddle Clubs. He planned and organized 13 trips to the Black Hills for the Sioux Center Saddle Club. He also was a member of the Heritage Board.

After his family, his love was his horses. Over the years, he attended many trail rides at Newton Hills State Park, Stone State Park, Lake Benton and many other rides in the area. He also enjoyed riding and driving his horses in parades. He had helped 40 brides and grooms celebrate the beginning of their married life together with a horse and carriage ride. Since 1989 when he was part of the South Dakota Wagon Train, he had been part of 82 wagon trains. After retiring, a hobby of his was building lawn ornaments out of old horse equipment. For the past eight years, he had assisted with fund-raising efforts and Supported New Life Treatment Center, Woodstock, Minn.

Left to celebrate his life are his wife, Henrietta; two sons and their wives, Mike and Denise Vander Broek of Sioux Center and Dan and Lori Vander Broek of Fairview S.D.; two daughters, Dawn Scott of Valley, Neb., and Elaine Vander Broek of Orange City, Iowa: six grandchildren Jennifer, Tanner, Courtney, Joseph, Jaini and Kaitlyn Vander Broek: and a sister, Marge Lubbers of Bigfork, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a younger brother, Don Vander Broek.
