JOAN VANDE BRAKE
Mrs. Joan Vande Brake, age 76, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, February 7, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
There will be a funeral service on Friday, February 11, at 10:00 am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Steven Vander Molen will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2:00 pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Joan was born on June 6, 1928, in Alton, the daughter of Evert and Ann (Kool) Roelfson. She was raised at Alton, where she graduated from the public high school in 1945. In 1947, she graduated from the Northwestern Junior College in Orange City. She was a teacher in elementary schools in Ayshire, Archer, and Marcus. She then attended the Westmar College in LeMars, where she completed her bachelors' degree in education. For the next twenty years, she taught in the LeMars Community Schools.
On August 25, 1972, she married Wilbur J. Vande Brake in Alton. They lived on a farm northwest of Orange City. In 1986, they moved to Orange City.
Mrs. Vande Brake was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Priscilla Circle. She had a strong faith in her Lord. Though suffering from both arthritis and cancer, she never complained. She was an inspiration to many.
One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Thankful to have shared her life are her husband of 32 years, "Bill"; two step-daughters and their husbands, Anita and Jack Vogel and Vicki and Hank Huisman, all of Orange City; seven grandsons, Jonathan Vogel, and his wife, Kristie; Joel Vogel, and his wife, Lisa; Joshua Vogel; Matthew Huisman; Michael Huisman; Dustin Haarsma; and Craig Haarsma; two granddaughters, Amy Siebersma, and her husband, Mike; and Jacque Vogel; five great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Jaxon Vogel; and Max, Trey, and Zoe Siebersma; and three sisters, Irene, and her husband, Harold Bunz, of Stillwater, Minnesota; and Shirley, and her husband, Art Hanson, and Evelyn Oldenkamp, all of Orange City.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a step-son, Robert Vande Brake; and a brother-in-law, William Olden
