Ruth was the daughter of Peter and Bessie (Vander Schaaf) Cambier. She attended Drake University, where she received her elementary education certificate. She then was a school teacher at Webster City. On June 17, 1932, she married Amos Donald Van Etten at Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where they established the Van Etten Funeral Home, which they operated until retiring in 1973. In 1984, Mr. and Mrs. Van Etten became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home, and in 1987, they transferred to the Heritage House Nursing Home, both in Orange City. Mr. Van Etten passed away January 8, 1989, at Orange City.
Mrs. Van Etten was a member of the American Reformed Church, where in earlier years, she had been active in the women’s organizations. She also belonged to the Ramblers.
Survivors include her two sons, Dr. Donald D. Van Etten and his wife, Verla, of Rapid City, South Dakota; and Robert R. Van Etten of San Francisco, California; three granddaughters, Julie Skea of Rapid City; Karen Schut of Des Moines; and Kris Fabrie of Gurnee, Illinois; grandson Jeffrey Van Etten of Gurnee; and four greatgrandchildren, Kelsey Jean Schut, Keaton Wade Schut, Rachel Joy Skea, and Alecia Nicole Skea.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sadie Vande Steeg.
