ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Nellie Van Engen, 78, of Rock Valley died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.
Services will be 10:30 am. Friday at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery of Doon, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Nellie was born March 23, 1926, near Hull, Iowa, the daughter of Jelle and Effie (Kooistra) DeBoer. She attended Hull Christian School and Rock Valley Christian School. Nell’s family moved near Doon in 1943. She married Harvey Van Engen on May 4, 1945, at Doon. Nell lived with a sister and worked in Grand Rapids, Mich., while Harvey was serving in the U.S. Army. In 1946, Nell and Harvey lived in Doon. In 1948, they lived in Rock Valley. In 1949, they lived in Hull. In July 1959, they moved to Inwood, Iowa, where they owned and operated Inwood Locker and Meat Market until retirement in 1979. After retirement, Nell and Harvey helped at their son’s butcher shop in Sioux Center, Iowa. In 1989, they moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and were active with the Sowers Mission Organization from 1994 to 1998. They moved to Rock Valley in 1999.
Nell enjoyed quilting and helping others with their quilts.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey; four sons and their spouses, Floyd and Mary of Anoka, Minn., Bob and Joan of George, Iowa, Brian and Jan of Willmar, Minn., and Douglas and Brenda of Orange City, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Marlys and Jay Vander Pol of Bellevue, Wash.; two brothers, Martin DeBoer of White Cloud, Mich., and James "Bud" DeBoer and his wife Wilma of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Ann Hoekstra and Eunice De Wit of Grand Rapids, Lynne Bouseman and her husband, William of Denver and Louise De Wit and her husband Don of Rock Valley; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
