JAKE B. VANDE GRIEND
Jake B. Vande Griend, 79, of Orange City died Monday, Jan.10, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Pastor Jack Gray officiated. Burial followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home, Orange City.
Jake was born Feb.28, 1920, at Orange City, the son of Ben and Gertrude (Zwagerman) Vande Griend. He was raised at Orange City.
On Feb. 12, 1941, he married Josephine Van Bruggen at Hawarden. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war the couple farmed at Orange City until 1953, when they moved into town. Jake was then employed by the Farmers Cooperative Oil Assoc. Later, Mr. and Mrs. Vande Griend operated Jake & Jo’s Cafe in Orange City for a few years. He then returned to the Co-op Station, retiring at age 65. Mrs. Vande Griend died Aug. 12, 1985, in Orange City.
On July 25, 1986, he married Jessie Kramer Cleveringa at Sioux Center. They made their home in Sioux Center for three years after which they lived in Orange, City.
Mr. Vande Griend was a member the Calvary Christian Reformed Church and Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post 329 in Orange City. He enjoy fishing, especially at Round Lake in Minesota.
Survivors include his wife; a son a his wife, Rodney and Phyl Vande Griend of Orange City; two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Glen De Zeeuw of Grafton, Wis., and Brenda and Kevin Fanders of Council Bluffs; four stepchildren and their spouses, Linda and Gary Kramer of Apple Valley, Minn., Wanda and Robert Taylor of Albuquerque, N.M., H. K. "Butch" and Lynne Cleveringa, Wayland, Mich., and Ruth and Ron Bouma of Orange City; six grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nellie Van Iperen, Orange City, and Berdena and her husband, Adolph Bylsma of Hull.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Pete Van Griend; and two stepsons, Jacob Keith and James Keith Cleveringa.
