JAMES VLIEGER
MAURICE. Iowa - James Vlieger, 81, of Maurice passed away Friday, March 4, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 am. Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa, with the Rev. Carl De Jong officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Township Cemetery, near Maurice. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 3 to 5 p.m., at the funeral home.
James Henry was born on April 12, 1923, in rural Alton, Iowa, the son of Henry and Alice (Ruisch) Vlieger. He was raised in Alton until he was in the seventh grade. His family then moved to a farm southeast of Maurice. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. New Jersey.
On April 12, 1946, he married Myra Geraldine Den Herder in Maurice. They farmed at Maurice until 1965, when they moved into Maurice, where he operated Jim’s Feed Store. In 1980, he began his employment with the Sioux County Road Department. retiring in 2003.
Mr. Vlieger was a 50-year member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, where he had served as commander. He had been a volunteer fireman for over 25 years and a member of the city council, both in Maurice. He also served as a trustee of Sherman township and had been business manager of their cemetery for many years. For more than 20 years, he was a state-sanctioned umpire at softball games. In earlier years, he had been an active member of First Reformed Church in Maurice.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years: four children and their spouses, Sandra and the Rev. Jack Ritsema of Ackley, Iowa, Rodney and Norine Vlieger of Altoona, Iowa, Kathy and John Leinenkugel of Omaha, Neb., and David and Carla Vlieger, of Maryville, Mo.: nine grandchildren: four great-grandchildren: a sister and her husband, Ella Mae and Wilfred Vande Burgt, Hull: and three sisters-in-law, Gladys Vlieger of Maurice, Sy1via Vlieger of Sioux Center, Iowa and Helen Vlieger of California.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Harold, and John Vlieger; and three sisters, Laura "Pat" Korver, Margaret "Mike" Hop and Jeanette, as a young child.
