ALICE VAN DER ZWAAG
Mrs. Alice Van Der Zwaag, age 83, of Orange City, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 1996 at the Orange City Hospital.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiated. Burial followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home, Orange City.
Alice was born Aug. 21, 1913 in Middleburg, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Baartman) Doppenberg. She grew up in that area and attended country school. On Dec. 16, 1936 she was united in marriage to Frank B. Van Der Zwaag. They farmed in this area until 1951 when they moved into Orange City. Together they owned and operated Frank’s Shoe Shop for 22 years. Frank died on July 15, 1976. Following his death, Alice continued to make her home in Orange City, and in October, 1989 became a resident of the Pioneer Home where she was living at the time of her death.
Mrs. Van DerZwaag was a past member of the Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg and a long-time member of First Reformed Church in Orange City where she was active in the Mary-Martha Circle.
Survivors include two daughters, Anna Beth Vermeer and her husband Ethan of Orange City and Carol Van Der Meide and her husband Ron of Cedar Falls; and a son, Alan Vander Zwaag and his wife Linda of Orange City; seven grandchildren, Ross Vermeer and his wife Percy of Hong Kong, Lynn Wauters and her husband Cary of Atlanta, Ga., Troy Vermeer of Lincoln, Neb., Ryan and Kelly Van Der Meide of Cedar Falls, and Kristofer and Allyson Vander Zwaag of Orange City; a sister, Carrie Ter Horst of Orange City; and three brothers, John Doppenberg and William Doppenberg of Orange City, and Peter Doppenberg of Lakewood, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Elizabeth Langstraat, a brother, Bernard Doppenberg, and a brother and sister in childhood.
