BRANDT VAN HEUKELOM
SANBORN, Iowa - Brandt "Bernie" Van Heukelom, 105, of Sanborn, formerly of Hull, Iowa, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Prairie View Nursing Home at Sanborn.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at American Reformed Church at Hull, with the Rev. Steve Bierly officiating. There will be a family devotions at 1:15 p.m. at the church before the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 4 p.m., at Sanborn Funeral Home in Sanborn.
Mr. Van Heukelom was born Dec. 8, 1894, at Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Teunis and Anna Marie (Peelen) Van Heukelom. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1912. He attended business college at Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, for one year. He married Effie Moss on Feb. 12,
1923, at Hull. They farmed between Hull and Sioux Center, retiring to Hull in 1959. They moved to Sanborn in 1985 and lived with their daughter. His wife died on Feb. 7, 1986.
He entered Prairie View Nursing Home on Nov. 30, 1993. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I from June 1918 to September 1921.
He belonged to the American Reformed Church of Hull where he served as an elder and a deacon.
He enjoyed fishing, playing piano, singing and playing games.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Vander Velde of Sanborn, and Ruth and her husband John Van Maanen of Rock Valley, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great~grand children; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kenneth Vander Velde; a special sister-in-law, Hilda Moss; and a sister, Mattie Reinhold.
