SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -Dawn Vermeer, 53, of Sioux Center died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Meniorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Thursday in Memory Gardens Cemetery. There will be a family prayer at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of First Reformed Church. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. with the family present 5 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Dawn Carol (Swets) Vermeer was born March 28, 1949, in Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marjorie (Van Gelder) Swets .She spent her childhood in Orange City, attending Orange City Christian School. She was a member oi the first graduating class of Unity Christian High School. She attended Northwestern College, achieving a degree in secondary education. She reigned as Tulip Queen in 1970 at the Orange City centennial celebration.
She married Evan Vermeer on Aug. 10, 1971 , and they made their home in Sioux Center. She taught junior high math and science for one year at St. Patrick School in Sheldon, Iowa, and three years at Orange City Christian School. Her earthly goal was always to be a wife and mother.
When children arrived she chose to be a stay-at-home mom. She was a member of First Reformed Church, where she was an active volunteer. She taught Sunday school and catechism, served on the library hoard and the education council.
Survivors include her husband, Evan; two daughters, Catherine and her husband, Matthew Bloom of Waukee, Iowa, and Elizabeth, a student at Iowa State University: a son, Eric, a student at Iowa State University; three sisters and their husbands, Barb and Glenn Bouma of Orange City, Jane and Bob Dorhout of Orange City, and Mary and Loren Brantsen of Sioux Center; her mother-in- law, Ellen Vermeer of Sioux Center: four sisters-in-law and their husbands; a brother-in-law and his wife; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marjorie Swets: and her father-in-law, Irwin Vermeer.
