ORANGE CITY, Iowa -Wilbert Leonard Vande Berg, 89, of Orange City died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers, Iowa, with the Rev. Dennis Hietbrink officiating. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6:30 p.m. today, with family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mr. Vande Berg was born May 31, 1913, in rural Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Bert and Dena (Rexwinkel) Vande Berg. He was raised at Newkirk and graduated from Newkirk High School.
He married Dorothy Ann Mol on May 24, 1943, in Sioux Center. Together they made their home on a farm near Newkirk. He also worked at Silent Sioux and later Metals Engineering, as well as being a custodian at the Sioux County Home. In December 2001 the couple moved to Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.
He was active in Newkirk Reformed Church where he was a lifetime member. He enjoyed baseball, pitching for several area teams in earlier years and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years; three daughters, Judy Plunkett, Gloria and her husband, Byron Nelson, all of Dallas, Texas, and Debra and her husband, Tim Poppen of Sioux City; a son-in-law, Herman Kluis of Orange City; four grandchildren, Adam Nelson, Brooke Nelson, Zachary Poppen and Daniel Poppen; and a brother and his wife, Harold and Yvette Vande Berg of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Merrie Lynn Kluis; a sister, Dorothy
Wiersma; and a brother, Lester Vande Berg.
