JOHN "Bill" TER HORST
John W. "Bill" Ter Horst, age 85, formerly of Orange City, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 1994 at the Edge Water Convalescent Home in Long Beach, Calif. Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 21, 1994 at 2:00 p.m. at the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City. Pastor Jack Gray officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.John William was born Jan. 10, 1909 at Orange City, the son of Gerrit and Clara (De Vries) Ter Horst. He was raised at Orange City. As an adult, he was employed by several farmers.During World War II, he served in the United States Army. He participated in the campaigns in Algiers, French Morocco, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Normandy, the Balkins, Rhineland, and Northern France, for which he was awarded 10 Bronze Stars. After the war, he became Orange City's "tulip-planting man." He later moved to California, where he was a gardener for private estates. In 1982, he retired at Bellflower. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Henry (Bertha) Bruxvoort, Mrs. Henry (Leona) Heynen, and Mrs. Henry (Etta) Vander Zwaag, all of Orange City, and Mrs. Jacob (Clareen) Van Den Berg ofMidland Park, New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Minnie Ter Horst, Mrs. William (Arta) Gesink, and Mrs. Joe (Johanna) Sandbulte; and a brother, Bert Ter Horst.
