HATTIE OOLMAN
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Hattie Oolman, 102, of Orange City passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004, at Orange City Municipal Hospital. Memorial services will be 11 am. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be prior to the service Wednesday in West Lawn Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 10 am. Wednesday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Hattie was born Aug. 8, 1901, in The Netherlands, the daughter of Herman and Susie (Holtrop) Scheeringa. At the age of three months, she came to America with her parents and two sisters. They first resided in Hospers, Iowa. After the death of her father, they moved to Orange City, where she attended Christian School. As a young adult, she worked for Drs. A. and John DeBey. On July 12. 1923, she married Herman E. Oolman in OrangeCity. They resided on the Oolman family farm east of Orange City for many years, where she was a homemaker and an accomplished seamstress. When Herm went into contracting, they moved into Orange City. He passed away May 12, 1975, in Orange City. She then lived in a condominium and later at the Pioneer Memorial Home, both in Orange City. For 25 years, she wintered in Arizona with her daughter and her family. In 1997, after a slight stroke, she became a resident of the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. She was a member of First Reformed Church, where she was active in the Lydia Circle. She also belonged to the auxiliaries of Northwestern College and the Municipal Hospital, both in Orange City. Survivors include her daughter, Charlene Brower of Mesa, Ariz.; a son and his wife, Cliff and Arlys Oolman of Orange City; a daughter-in-law, Eulyn Oolman of Orange City; seven grandchildren: 20 great-grandchildren: two great-great-grandchildren: and a sister and her husband, Sue and Wilbur Ver Steeg of Orange City.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Oolman; a son-in-law, Fred Brower; a grandson, Rick Brower; five sisters, Edith Vink, Maggie Siebersma, Tillie Kuiken, Catherine Vogelaar and Jennie Muilenburg; and her stepfather, Douwe Dykstra.
