Mary Johnson, 98, Hawarden, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Funeral service was Tuesday at the Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township rural Le Mars with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial was at the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home, Hawarden, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Johnson was born May 16, 1901, near Ireton, to Rudolph and Theda (Janssen) Klave. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ireton. She attended rural school near Hawarden. She married Onno Johnson March 7, 1928, in Nebraska. They lived on the family farm north of Hawarden until 1940 when they moved to a farm in Grant Township, rural Le Mars. They became custodians of the Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township in 1947, which they did for 37 years. They moved to Hawarden, due to Onno’s health in 1984. He died December 5, 1987. Mrs. Johnson moved to Hillcrest Health Care Center in July 1996.

She was confirmed and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden until their move to Grant Township. She enjoyed crocheting, especially dolls. She made many silk flower arrangements and did lots of baking. She and her husband were Godparents for many nephews, nieces and friends.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ida Johnson of Hawarden and Evelyn Klave of Akron; many nephews and nieces.
