Hawarden - Merle Yates, 78, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, in a Hawarden hospital.

Services were at 1:30 P.M., Friday in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Marion Bloodworth officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery. A prayer service was at 8 P.M., Thursday in the Dow Funeral Home.

Mr. Yates was born Dec. 5, 1899 in rural Ireton. He married Edith Lindenman Nov. 30, 1922, in rural Ireton.

He was a farmer, and retired in 1959 and moved into Hawarden. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include the widow; three sons, Lloyd of Mill Valley, Calif., Wesley of Davis, Calif., and Stanley of Ireton; eight granddaughters.
