Edward John Gerrit was the son of John and Jennie (Bloemendaal) Vander Wilt. He was raised in Hospers, where he attended the Hospers Christian School and later the Western Christian Academy in Hull, IA.
On December 18, 1935, he married Nancy Bernice Harmsen at Sheldon, IA. Together they farmed northwest of Hospers until 1944, when they moved into town. Nancy passed away on March 17, 1999, in Sioux City, IA. Shortly after his wife’s passing, "Ed" moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, IA.
In earlier years, he owned and operated One Stop Service in Hospers, a service station and car dealership. He was also an inventor, mechanic, and truck driver,
Ed was a life long member of the Hospers Christian Reformed Church, where he was involved in the Men’s Society and taught Sunday school classes. He had also been a member of the Hospers Christian School Board at the time their most recent building was constructed.
Mr. and Mrs. Vander Wilt looked forward to winters in Texas and summers at various lakes in Minnesota. He also enjoyed auto racing and fishing.
Survivors include his two daughters; Jennie Marilyn Beimers of Hospers; and Wanda J., and her husband, The Rev. Kenneth Van De Griend of Waupun, Wisconsin; five grandchildren and their spouses, Lance and Denise Beimers, Lynae and John Wagenaar. Tom and Cherylyn Van De Griend, Jeanie and Jim Heethuis. and Cory and Angela Van De Griend, twelve great-grandchildren, Larissa and Dalton Beimers; Naisia, Hanna, Lyvia, and Mylia Wagenaar; Peyton
Van De Griend: Ezra, Ellie, and Esther Heethuis; and Anna and Ethan Van De Griend, and a sister- in-law, Angeline Elgersma of Sanborn.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Lloyd Beimers, and two brothers, Arnold and his wife Mac, and Arthur.
