William, who was known as "Bill", was the son of Wilhelm and Henrietta (Romberg) Gebauer. He was raised at Alton.
On June 21, 1939, he married Helen G. Erkes in Sheldon. They made their home in Alton, where Bill was a oil jobber, operating a tank wagon for many years. They also operated a dairy on their acreage. He retired in 1978.

He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church. Bill enjoyed playing horseshoes and also liked gardening.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters and their husbands, Judith Anne and Robert Muilenburg of Seattle, Washington; Mary Jo and Bill Kammerer of Yuma, Arizona; Shirley Jean and Lauren Vos of Sioux Center; and Sharon Jane and Ben Eberle of San Diago, California; two sons and their wives, William III and Teresa Gebauer of Albert City; and Bruce Alan and Rhonda Gebauer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; and a brother, Henry Gebauer of Hawarden.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Robbie Muilenburg; three sisters, Ann Bills, Jeanette Weis, and Shirley Wurth; and four brothers, Julius, Gus, Ralph, and John Gebauer.
