Bessie was the daughter of Cornelius and Jennie (Brandsma) Vander Veen. She was raised on a farm near Springfield, South Dakota. As a young adult, she came to Newkirk to assist farm families.

On June 19. 1941, she married Arthur De Graaf at Newkirk, They farmed at Newkirk. He passed away November 16, 1961, at Newkirk.

Mrs. De Graaf then moved to Alton. In 1966, she moved to Orange City, where she was a seamstress at De Vries Interiors, retiring in 1988.

She was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, where she participated in most of the activities, especially Reformed Church Womens Ministries and Boosters.

Survivors include her two daughters and their husbands, Aileen and Tim Barnhouse of Iowa City, IA: and Barbara and Arlan Van Rocket of Des Moines, IA; a son and his wife, Allan and Barbara De Graaf of Memphis, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Nancy and Ian, Brett and Andra, and Nathan and Angela; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Robin: a brother, Henry Vander Veen of Orange City: and a sister. Minnie Odens of Springfield, SD.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Pier, Cornelius, and Sears Vander Veen: and two sisters, Tena Den Ouden and Alice Evling,
