August Alfred was the son of John W. and Louisa (De Boer) Smit.
On February 10, 1926, he married Gertie Vis at Hull, IA. They farmed near Hull until 1972, when they retired into town. In June of 1988, he became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull. Mrs. Smit passed away February 5, 1990, at Hull, IA.
In April of 1991, he transferred to the Sioux Center Community Health Center, where he passed away.
He was a member of the American Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory and had been secretary of the Sunday School for forty years.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Arnold and Betty of Orange City, Iowa; Delmar and Ardel, of Ireton, Iowa; Howard and Arlene, of Ontario, California; and Allen and Rose, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three daughters and their husbands, Phyllis and Marvin Wissink, of Sioux Center, Iowa; Luella and Bud Krommendyk, of Ontario, California; and Judy and Jim Kersbergen, of Arlington, Texas; 29 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Gerrrit (Julia)Hofkamp, of Sibley, Iowa..
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Darlene) Van Otterloo; an infant son, Alfred; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Walter and Dowie Smit.
