Harriett was the daughter of Dirk and Grada (Nyman) Schutt. She graduated from Sioux Center Community High School and then was a teacher in Rural Schools for four years.

On December 12, 1929, she married Dick Mulder at Sioux Center. They made their home in Alton, where Harriett was a very active member of the Presbyterian Church, including teaching catechism and Sunday School classes. She was also active in several Women’s Organizations and was Executive Secretary and Home Service Director to Military Families for Sioux County American Red Cross for 37 years. Mr. Mulder passed away November 5, 1960, at Alton.

Mrs. Mulder then was employed in the Business Office at Northwestern College in Orange City for sixteen years.

Survivors include her two children and their spouses, Colleen and Rod Scholten of Le Mars; and Dave and Dot Mulder of Sioux Center; four grandchildren, Nancy and her husband, Stan Speer; Steven Scholten and his wife. Nancy Ann; Dick Mulder; and Amy and her husband, Kyle Achterhoff; five great-grandchildren, Scott and T.J. Speer, Nicole and Allison Scholten, and Sarah Achterhoff; two sisters, Henrietta TeStroete of Hospers and Johanna Dykstra of Le Mars; and a brother, Gerrett Schutt of Sioux Center.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
