Donald Wayne Wassenaar, 78, of Sheldon died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at a Council Bluffs, Iowa hospital.
Services were April l7 at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.
Donald Wayne Wassenaar was born May 28, l927, in Orange City, the son of Andrew and Susan (Wielenga) Wassenaar. He lived his youth in Orange City where he attended and graduated from Orange City Christian grade school.
He was united in marriage to Alyda Helen Kraayenbrink of Middleburg on January 24, l950. They lived in Orange City until l959, when they moved to Sheldon.
Don was a professional truck driver. He started driving truck when he was l7 years old--"You name it, he hauled it." When he was on the road his family liked to ride along and also sometimes drove. They have very wonderful memories of spending time with him in the truck and growing together as a family. He was a very giving person and never turned anyone away. He loved to drive anything, especially his Harley golf cart. Don also enjoyed spending time at the campground at the lakes and visiting with friends at various locations.
He was a member of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, where he was a member of the men's Bible study.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Alyda Wassenaar of Sheldon; his children, Alan and Nancy Wassenaar of Doon, Diane and Dick Burns of Archer, Daryl and Marcia Wassenaar of Sheldon, Barb and Glen Vanden Hull of Archer and Sheila and Mike Weier of Linn Grove, a foster son, Harry Probert of Kentucky; l9 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alfred Wassenaar of Sheldon, James and Mildred Wassenaar of Orange City and Stan and Kathy Wassenaar of Yucca Valley, Calif.; a sister, Wilhelmina Gesink of Sheldon; three sisters-in-law, Nellie Wassenaar of Orange City, Net Wassenaar of Ellsworth, Minn., and Wilhelmina Kraayenbrink of Hull; and a brother-in-law, Henrich and Marilyn Kraayenbrink of Sioux Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Veryl Wassenaar; two brothers, Joubert Wassenaar and Ralph Wassenaar; and a brother-in-law, Asa Kraayenbrink.
