Dave Johnson Succumbs After a Long Illness

Funeral services for Dave A. Johnson, 68, who died at the Veterans hospital in Iowa City last Saturday morning (June 6, 1964) following a long illness during which time he was also hospitalized in Sioux Falls were held in Trinity Lutheran church here Tuesday afternoon, June 9, with Rev. O. F. Pittack conducting the service. Miss Janet Heuer a the organ and the church choir singing “Asleep in Jesus” and “I’m but a Stranger Here”.

Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery with the Barnard Funeral home in charge and the Two Oakes post of the American Legion conducting the military rites. Casket bearers were Walter Westergard, Elmer Johnson, Floyd Green, Fred Dawson, John Harmelink and Harry Bultman. Honorary pall bearers were members of the Last Man’s club.

David August Johnson, son of Meint Johnson and wife, Mary, was born on March 4, 1896, northeast of Ireton. He lived on a farm with his parents until 1918 when he entered the military service of his country until his honorable discharge in 1919, having served overseas, mostly in France, during World War I.

On December 23, 1919, he was united in marriage with Hattie Schlumbohm at Peace Lutheran church of Sioux Center, Iowa, Rev. E. H. Gilman performing the ceremony. At that time he also transferred his church membership to that congregation from St. Paul’s Lutheran church of Ireton where he had been baptized and confirmed.

During the next 20 years he was engaged in farming in Garfield township, southwest of Rock Valley. In 1939 he retired to Hawarden, where be became a member of he local congregation. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Saddle club and the Last Man’s club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Herman, John and George, who died at age six and two sisters Alice Eilts and a sister who died in infancy.

Survivors include the widow, Hattie; a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Inez) Treiber of Hudson; two grandchildren, Dennis and Glenda; one great-granddaughter, Kristen Treiber; three brothers, Ed and Fred of Ireton, Elmer of Santa Monica, California; three sisters, Anna Vlotho and Mrs. John Moeller of Ireton and Etta Gehner of Maynard, Minnesota.

Relatives and friends attending from a distance include Mrs. Anna Vlotho and Mr. and Mrs. George Stoffer and baby from Santa Monica, California, Mr. and Mrs. Harm Johnson of Baltic, South Dakota, Rev. and Mrs. Noel Orcutt of Davenport, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Jahde of Webster, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Lee McElwain of Blencoe, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Breitkreutz and Douglas of Wisner, Nebraska, and others from Inwood, Larchwood, Rock Valley, Hudson, Alcester, Le Mars, Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Sioux Center and Beresford.
