WILLIAM ANTHONY VERDOORN
William Anthony, was the son of William Anthony, Sr., and Gertrude (Vischer) Verdoorn. He was born on November 8, 1915, Orange City, IA. and died on November 14, 2007 at Royale Meadows Care Center, Sioux Center, IA. He was raised at Middleburg, and he served in the United States Army during World War II.
On September 4, l942, he married Henrietta Wilmina Addink in Camp Haan, California. After the war, they made their home in Orange City for over four years. They then farmed at Ashton for seven years. In l955, they moved to a farm near Newkirk, where they have since resided. He retired in l982.
In February of 2006, "Bill" became a resident of the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon. In April of 2006, he transferred to the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.
He was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as both a deacon and an elder. He also belonged to the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Oerange City. He thoroughly enjoyed farming and he liked to fish.
Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years, "Hattie"; three sons and their wives, Lt. Col. William John (Ret.) and Janice Verdoorn, of Belleville, Illinois; James and Vera Verdoorn, of Hull; and Robert and Kathy Verdoorn, of Hospers; eight grandchildren, Dan Swanger and his wife, Jessica; and Kathryn, William "Vance", Priscilla, Gina, Jillian, Chris and Andrea Verdoorn; three great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Aubrie, and Chloie Swanger; and a brother and his wife, Anthony "Tony" and Ann Verdoorn, and a sister-in-law, Betty Verdoorn, all of Orange City.
He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Dick, Jake, Joe, Henry, John, Cornelius" Cornie", Bert, and Johnnie Verdoorn as a child and five sisters, Ann Oldenkamp, Fannie Oldenkamp, Marie Verdoorn, Gertrude Engleltjes, and twins in infancy.
Funeral Services were held at the Newkirk Reformed Church, Hospers, IA on November 17, 2007 at l0:30 a.m. with The Rev. David Powers officiating.Casket Bearers were Arie Byl, John Byl, John De Groot, Bill Engeltjes, Don Engeltjes and Larry Verdoorn. Honorary Casket Bearer was Anthony "Tony" Verdoorn. Military Rites were by Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post; Orange City, Iowa.
Interment was in the Newkirk Cemetery of Rural Hospers, IA.
