William "Bill" Miller, 59, of rural Marcus, died unexpectedly at his home Friday, Jan. 15, 2010.
William Walter Miller was born Feb. 26, 1950, in Le Mars, one of four sons born to Darrell and Esther (Horstman) Miller. He attended school in Marcus, graduating from Marcus High School in 1968. Bill continued his education at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. He earned a bachelor of arts in education with a double major in history and English and a double minor in drama and physical education.
On Sept. 5, 1971, Bill was united in marriage to Darlys Sumption in Frederick, S.D. Bill's first teaching job was in Faulkton, S.D., where he taught history, drama and English. Bill's father wanted him to return to farming, so in 1973, Bill returned to Marcus. He farmed with his father near Marcus until his father's death, and returned to teaching in 1995 while farming. Bill taught as a substitute teacher and as the drama teacher at Marcus High School.
In 2000, Bill took a position at Spalding Catholic High School. He coached all the competition speech, as well as teaching several classes. During these years Bill also worked as a hog buyer for Supreme Packing in Sioux Center.
Bill was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus and taught Sunday School on the high school level for many years. In his earlier years, Bill belonged to 4-H and later was a 4-H leader for his children. He served on the Marcus School Board and directed community plays in Germantown.
He enjoyed playing cards with a local group and coon hunting in the area, of which there are many stories to be told.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, and had a passion for working with speech students, each year striving to exceed the previous year winnings, and teaching his students the meaning and rewards of hard work.
Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife Darlys of Marcus; three sons and their wives, Chad and Erin of Marcus, Paul and Stephanie of Hospers, and Kyle and Amber of Worthington, Minn.; grandchildren Shannon, Isaak, Gus, Claire, Asya and Brayden; three brothers, Bob and Cheryl of Rushmore, Minn., Brad of St. Louis, Mo., and Brian and LuAnn of Marcus; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew Matthew.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. The Rev. James Gruber will officiate. Burial will follow at Marcus Amherst Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the Earnest - Johnson Funeral Home of Marcus. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Tuesday.
