Lyda was the daughter of Gerrit and Josie (Keizer) Rensink. She was raised at Newkirk, where she graduated from high school.
On February 24, 1938, she married John Koster at Newkirk. They farmed at Hospers for two years and then moved to a farm by Newkirk. where they lived until 1990. They then moved to Orange City and in 1998, became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home. In the fall of 2000, she transferred to the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. Since October of 2001, she has lived at the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility.
John passed away February 11, 2003, in Orange City.
Mrs. Koster was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she had taught Sunday School classes. She had also participated in the women’s organizations there, especially the Golden Hour Circle and later, the Mission Fellowship.
She was one of the founders of the girls’ 4-H club for the Newkirk area. She enjoyed quilting and helped many quilters with the framing process. She and her husband did much traveling, including going to Europe and the Holy Land.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Roger and Sheryl Koster, of Orange City; and Leon and Ruth Koster, of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Beth and Edwin Ascher. of Wellsburg, IA.; seven grandchildren, Kara Schriner, Kyle Koster, Karisa Friedmann, Steven Koster, Kathleen Thode, Suzanne Oordt, and Tim Oordt; three stepgrandchildren, Maria Groninga. Julie Werkman, and Christina Frantz; ten great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Henrietta Rensink, of Orange City, IA; and Eleanor Van Gelder. of Alton, IA.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Reynold Van Gelder.
Memorials will be directed to the church.
