Edmund E. Burton was born April 23, 1918, in Hawarden, the son of Chris and Essie (Edmunds) Burton. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1936 and Grinnell College in 1941 with a BA Degree.
He married E. Marie Bowman on November 14, 1940. He farmed the home place most of his life. Ed was a member of the Hawarden United Methodist Church, a 50-year Mason being Secretary of the Dale Masonic Lodge for 27 years. He also was a member of the Sioux City York Rites, Sioux City Consistory, Abu Bekr Shrine and the Order of Eastern Star.
Ed died Friday, May 1, 1998, at the Morningside Manor Nursing Home in Alcester, South Dakota, at the age of 80 years.
Survivors include his wife, Marie; son, Tom, and wife Lois, of Sioux City; daughter, Paula, and husband Dennis Jamtgaard, of Aberdeen, South Dakota; six grandsons, Stuart Burton, Scott Burton, Jay Jamtgaard and wife, Kim, Cory “Ben” Jamtgaard and wife, Meg, Les Peterson and wife, Robin, and Chris Peterson; four granddaughters, Kellie Riley and husband, Rob, Kim Schendel and husband, Neil, Nichol Burton and Michele Sayre: and seven great-grandchildren.
