Chris Burton Dies Suddenly

Passed Away While Visiting in Town Sunday Evening

Was Not Yet 55 Years Old and Had Lived Here Since He Was 21 - Leaves Wife and One Son

C. E. Burton, well known farmer of this community, died very suddenly between 10 and 11 o’clock Sunday evening (May 5, 1935). He had been visiting at the John J. McManaman home in Hawarden that evening and had accompanied Mr. McManaman outside the house. While the latter was busy milking a goat Mr. Burton sat in a cart visiting with him. When Mr. McManaman finished with his chores he went into the house to look after preparations for lunch advising Mr. Burton that he would call him as soon as it was ready. A short time later he called, but received no answer and on going to the cart found Mr. Burton unconscious there. A physician was immediately summoned but life was found to be extinct. City officials were at once advised of his death and Mayor Thompson called Coroner A. C. Jongewaard at Sioux Center, but upon being advised of the circumstances the coroner decided that death was due to natural causes and that no inquest was necessary.

Funeral services were held at the home just east of the city limits, at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Robt. H. Forrester, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by many long time friends of the deceased.

Chris E. Burton was born in Kansas September 15, 1880, he was not yet 55 years of age. He lived for several years at Tarkio, Missouri, and came to Hawarden in 1901, and except for brief intervals has resided in this community ever since. On March 28, 1906, he was united in marriage with Miss Essie Edmunds, who with their son, Edmunds, now a Junior in the Hawarden high school, survives him. He is also survived by his mother, who resides in Orange, California, and by four sisters, Mrs. Winona Anderson of Orange, California; Mrs. Abe Baublets of Pomona, California; Mrs. Frank Freeman of Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Dave Roberts of Chicago, and one brother, Logan Burton of Pomona, California, Mrs. Roberts came from Chicago to attend the funeral.

During his many years of residence in this community Chris Burton acquired many fast friends. For number of years, he assisted his father-in-law, the late Wm. Edmunds, in the operation of his fine farm, just east of the corporation limits of Hawarden, and following the death of Mr. Edmunds remained to take active management of the farming and live stock feeding operations in partnership with Mrs. Edmunds. He was a hard worker, strictly honorable in all his business relationships, generous, every kindly and considerate of the welfare of his family and hade a host of friends who were shocked at his sudden death and who extend sincere sympathy to the member of his family.
