From the Alton Democrat of Oct 19, 1889 from Maurice Times.
Our quiet community was startled Tuesday forenoon to learn that Michael Lang who resided four miles south east of town, had committed suicide by shooting himself with a shot gun. In the absence of the Coroner, W. H. Reeves, F. P. empanelled a jury and went out and held an inquest on the body. They found that he had seated himself on the side of the bed, placed the muzzle of the gun to his mouth and by the means of a stick he had pressed back the trigger the whole charge of the gun passing upward through his head. Cause unknown. Mr. Lang was a well-to-do farmer, and was held in high seteem by his neighbors, and in fact by all who know him. He leaves a wife and a large family. His funeral was held Wednesday afternoon when a large concourse of friends and relatives followed hte remains to his last resting place.
(The submitter found the family in the 1885 census of Sherman township. Michael was 44 years, his wife Rozine was 32, children were charles 11, Mary 9, George 4, Lewissa 2. In the 1925 IA census there was a son of them Michael born abt 1889, listing parents as Michael Lang and Rosine Goodyear. The Sioux county cemetery Index lists them as M. Lang b. 2 Feb 1811(1841) died 15 Oct 1889; Rosa Lang b. 30 oct 1843 died 17 Feb 1907, they were both buried in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery rural Ireton.)
