ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Nicholas J. Cleveringa, 77, of Orange City passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alton Reformed Church in Alton, Iowa, with the Revs. Michael Hardeman and Elizabeth Hardeman officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City. Visitation will be after 3:30 p.m. today, with the family present 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Nicholas Jacob was born Feb. 7, 1927, in rural Alton, the son of Lou and Jennie (Roghair) Cleveringa. He was raised on a farm north of Alton and attended Alton Public School. At the end of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Okinawa.

On July 27, 1950, he married Wilmina Hendrika Aberson in Orange City. They farmed north of Alton most of their married life. Later, they moved to Orange City. In August 2003, he became a resident of the Sioux Center Nursing Facility.

He was a member of Alton Reformed Church, where he taught Sunday School. He also was a member of Floyd American Legion Post in Alton and served on the board of directors of the Farmers Elevator in Alton and the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, traveling, hunting and dancing the polka.

Survivors include his wife, "Mina"; four children, Beverly and her husband, Duane Van Zee of Sioux Center, Iowa, Lester Cleveringa and his wife, Cindy of Alton, Randall Cleveringa of Orange City and Rhonda and her husband, Matthew Carney of Ames, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Kelly and her husband, Dale Franklin of Marion, Iowa, Ryan Van Zee and his wife, Jill of Sioux Center, Kamie Van Zee of Sioux Center, Ross Van Zee and his wife, Abby of Sioux Center, Chad Cleveringa of Alton and his fiancee, Amy Van Der Zwaag, Erin and her husband, Barry Emmelkamp of Sioux Center, Kyle Cleveringa of Alton, and Paige, Samantha and Gabriel Carney, all of Ames, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Rouvina) Wiekamp and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Vander Broek, both of Orange City; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ed (Wilmina) Cleveringa of Orange City.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Natalie June; twin grandsons, Brant and Bryant Van Zee; a brother, Edward J. Cleveringa; and three sisters, Mrs. Hilbert (Henrietta) Jager, Mrs. Marion (Catherine) Van De Brake and Laura Cleveringa.

Memorials may be directed to Sioux County SHEARS and Hospice or the Alton Reformed Church.
