John Van Holland, son of John and Bertha (Ennema) Van Holland was born September 15, 1933 in their farm house near Rock Valley. He attended Rock Valley Christian School then he and his brother stayed home to help their mother on the family farm. John married Darlene De Jager on July 26, 1955 at Carmel, Iowa. Two weeks later John went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After serving, he returned home and farmed by Rock Valley as farming was his passion. His life’s work established the family farm which he worked with his 8 children. John was a member of First Christian Reformed Church and a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church where he served as elder, committees, and church building committees. He played influential roles in several organizations, including the Rural Water board for 20 years, Pork Producers, Western Christian School Board. His passion for Jesus and his servant’s heart lead him to serve the Nashville, Okalona, and Mississippi areas helping in any way he could. John’s family, friends and faith were most important to him. He enjoyed going to grandchildren’s events, which took up a great deal of time; he enjoyed a rousing game of cards with friends, golfing, traveling, spending time camping, and coffee time with the men at Stone Soup and Subway.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Darlene of 54 years; son, Doug (Geri) Van Holland of Sioux City; daughter Pam (Jerry) Van Roekel of Rock Valley; son Dave (Leanne) Van Holland of Sioux Center; daughter Laura (Glen) Sneller of Sioux Center; son Bryan (Bonnie) Van Holland of Sioux City; son Lyle (Sharla) Van Holland of Rock Valley; daughter Cindy (Brad) Kamstra of Littleton, Colorado/Rock Valley, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; brothers Gerrit (Jeanette) Van Holland of Oregon; Dick (Mary) Van Holland of Texas; Tom (Marlene) Van Holland of Rock Valley; sister, Gertie Boeve of Rock Rapids; brother-in-law, Dr Edwin Kragt of Rock Rapids.
