Gladys Vlieger, 82, of rural Maurice, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday Dec.13, 2008.

The former Gladys Eileen Becker was born Dec. 27, 1925, the daughter of Louis and Jennie (Nicholson) Becker at the Becker homestead near Ireton. Gladys attended #7 Reading Township country school for eight years and attended Maurice High School in Maurice for four years, graduating in 1943.

She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Ireton, and was also a member of the LWML. She was baptized by the Rev. C.D. Nuoffer and confirmed by the Rev. S.W. Becker. Gladys was united in marriage to Harold Vlieger on Sept. 26, 1951 by the Rev. Wm. Hauser. The couple farmed for many years in the Maurice area. Harold went to be with Jesus on Aug. 21, 1981.

Gladys enjoyed antique and thrift shopping, candle-wicking, and collecting dolls. She also enjoyed writing letters to family and friends and donating stuffed animals to various children's groups at Christmas time.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Jenet and Darrel Barents of Orange City, Ellen and Mark Plendl of Orange City, Robert Vlieger of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Howard and Pamela Vlieger of Maurice; grandchildren: Renae and Ben Vande Brake of Sheldon, Jerris and Kara Barents of Weston, Wis., Jennie Barents of Orange City, Sarah Vlieger of Highlands Ranch, Colo., David Vlieger of Maurice and his fiancé Alison Waggie of Vermillion, S.D., and Rachael Vlieger of Maurice; three great-grandsons: Colton and Christopher Vande Brake of Sheldon, and Mathias Barents of Weston, Wis.; sisters-in-law Amy Becker of Le Mars, Sylvia Vlieger of Sioux Center, Myra Vlieger of Orange City, and Helen Vlieger of Ontario, Calif.; Ella Mae Vande Burgt and brother-in-law Wilfred Vande Burgt of Hull; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Jennie Becker; her husband Harold; her brothers: Ralph, Wallace, Ronald and William "Bill" Becker; a nephew David Becker; a niece Bonnie Stewart; parents-in-law Henry and Alice (Ruisch) Vlieger; sisters and brothers-in-law: Lavone Becker, Louella Becker, Laura "Pat" and William G. Korver, Margaret and Harold Hop, and William, James, John and Mary Ann Vlieger.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 4755 Fir Ave., Ireton, with Pastor David Daumer officiating. There will be a private burial before the service at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars and from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Ireton, where there will be a prayer service at 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial is established and will be divided between The Good Shepherd Hour, Lutheran Hour Ministries and St. John's Lutheran Church.
